Left Handers Day

Left-Handers Day History

On 13th August 1992 the Club launched our first International Left-Handers Day, an annual event when left-handers everywhere can celebrate their sinistrality and increase public awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of being left-handed. This event is now celebrated worldwide, and in the U.K. alone there have been more than 20 regional events to mark the day in recent years – including left-v-right sports matches, a left-handed tea party, pubs using left-handed corkscrews where patrons drank and played pub games with the left hand only, and nationwide “Lefty Zones” where left-handers creativity, adaptability and sporting prowess were celebrated, whilst right-handers were encouraged to try out everyday left-handed objects to see just how awkward it can feel using the wrong equipment! Some sources suggest that August 13th was first proposed as Left Handers Day in the USA by Dean R. Campbell back in 1976 but we dont have any further information on this – to the best of our knowledge he had no involvement in the running of this club at any time.

These events have contributed more than anything else to the general awareness of the difficulties and frustrations left-handers experience in everyday life, and have successfully led to improved product design and greater consideration of our needs by the right-handed majority – although there is still a long way to go!!

Why does daysoftheyear.com say Left Handers Day started in 1976, but your site says 1992? Which is the correct inaugural year?

We started our International Left Handers Day back in 1992

The idea of having a separate day for left-handers emerged in the 1976 with the American Dean R. Campbell declaring August 13 as a day dedicated to left-handers. However, at that time, this initiative was not as widespread as it is today.

In 1990, the “Left-Handers Club” was established in Great Britain. The club held the first International Left-Handers Day on August 13, 1992. The aim was to highlight the difficulties left-handers face in daily life and to explain that some items that seem ordinary to right-handers are not at all comfortable for left-handers. Thus, August 13 became the day for left-handers on the calendar.

When I was in school in the early 70’s, and we were learning to write cursive, the teacher asked “is anyone left handed?” I held up my hand and she tossed me a pamphlet on writing for left handers. Kept it for years though it didn’t help much…. Having said that, writing was the only thing I found tricky. Working with tools in various trades I always managed.

But having recently got into guitars being a lefty presents a noticeable disadvantage. There are a 100 guitars in a shop and 2 will be lefties, and they never go on sale….

Other than that, no real issues in the right hand world

Just read about left hander’s day. How was that particularly day chosen? It just so happens that I am left handed and my birthday is also on the 13th of August.
    Some coincidence.
    Cheers, Warren

I’m the only lefty in my family. I’ve been gifted the gift of being a left handed artist, I’m a tattoo artist and sketch artist and do a little bit of paintings.

  6. Nitesh says:

I am a complete lefty man leaving in India. I am the only lefty in our large family. In India in religious ceremonies or weddings etc. we tend to be criticized when we eat food by left hand. 😃😃😃😃

  7. Ruth Deprey says:

I love this club. I’m the only lefty in my family so it’s great to hear other people have the same issues I grew up with.
