Left Handed Products

If you struggle with some everyday tasks and people think you are awkward or just hopeless, it is almost certainly NOT YOU, but the incorrect tools you are using!

Here are some examples of how left-handed versions of everyday items are different and why they will make a big difference for you

Scissors

If you or your child find that you tend to tear the paper rather than cutting it and you can never cut cleanly along a line

Cutting with right handed scissors

It is probably because you are using the wrong scissors.

Left-handed scissors have the blades reversed so the top blade is always on the left so that you can see your cutting line and the natural squeezing action of your hand pushes the blades together so they can cut like a guillotine rather than pushing them apart so the paper bends between the blades.

Cutting bread

Do you always make a mess of cutting bread and end up with doorstep slices and an overhanging loaf?

Cutting bread badly with a right handed knife

The answer could be a simple as getting a proper left-handed bread knife with the serrations on the right side of the blade so it counteracts the natural twisting motion of your hand as it should rather than reinforcing it.

Opening tins and peeling

If you just cannot get to grips with a "normal" tin opener

A standard tin opener is completely right handed

Just get a proper left handed tin opener that is fully reversed in design and works naturally the way you want to hold and turn it

Opening cans is easy with a left handed can opener

Peeling fruit and vegetables can be very difficult with a right-handed peeler as you have to peel away from yourself and end up scraping your knuckles in the process. A two sided peeler is much better and one designed to be held in the left hand as you peel towards your body is ever better.

Writing

A lot of left handers get into awkward writing positions and smudge their work because they are trying to make a standard ink pen work. These are, of course, designed for right handers to PULL across the page from left to right with the nib being dragged behind and writing smoothly. When a left-hander tries to PUSH is across the page nib first it just digs into the paper and you get no ink flow. Contorting the writing position to make it work just leads to smudging and bad writing.

A lefthander cannot write with a right handed ink pen

The answer is to use a specially designed left handed pen that has the nib rounded at the end to flow smoothly when pushed and also the centre cut on the nib moved to the other side so that you get smooth ink flow with the left side of the nib pressed to the paper rather than the right.

In the garden

A garden pruner needs to be reversed like a pair of left-handed scissors so the top blade is on the left and you can cut plants cleanly rather than just tearing chunks off them.

The better designs also have the blade locking mechanism moved to the right side so you can easily operate it with your left thumb.

Many larger garden tools are designed for right handers and difficult, if not dangerous, to use left-handed. Chainsaws are a good example. Even seemingly ambidextrous items like lawn edging shears do not actually work properly for left-handers who normally prefer to work in a right to left direction.

This pair of specially designed left handed lawn edging shears has the blades reversed so the top glade can be held still on top of the grass edge (it has a guide that is behind the top blade in this view) while the bottom blade moves and cuts the grass cleanly.

There are many more examples of tools and equipment that is difficult for left-handers to use and you can see a very wide range of specially designed left-handed items on the Anything Left-Handed website.

it is true that there are toos just simply not made for leftys. but we learn to adapt. and in the long run were not that diferent. in school i never understood why it was so hard to cut along the lines. or why i would always end up with so many smudges on my paper when id write. i later found out why and simply adapted. the only thing that gave me the hardest trouble were the scisors. but what i simply did was while still using left hand, id start cuting from the righte to the left. or in other words counter clock wise if say i had to cut something round. yes my hand would sometimes get in the way but i got used to it. until this day if u look at my note book u will see that i have to write from the back pages to the front so that the notebook coils dont get in my way. but at the end of the day i dont regret being lefty. it gives you somehting to stand out from the rest of the people. and it gives you the uper hand if anyone ever wants to wrestle with their laft hand.

that explains while my bread does that also i always get fussed at if im cutting tomatoes and stuff cause i cut them towards me. but you guys forgot how awful it is to use a weed whacker. i always forget to use it right handed until i whack my leg once or twice. the direction the string turns just doesn't mix well with lefties especially near a fence. ouch. lol

Well the problem i have is that im Left Handed, but i cut with my right hand, and in school i was given Left-Handed Scissors and i couldent use them, so i used to get told i was Right Handed, but when i started to write id use my Left hand.

I left Secondary School last year and now i have relsied i can Cut and Write at the same time, id say that was a good thing?

It is barbarous and murderous to force a lefty to be righty - By Raúl Morales Marrero
30th March 2008 - 8:17pm

It is barbarous and murderous to force a lefty to be righty because at long and short, they are violating their real decision to use the hand of their preference. The teachers tried to force my dad Miguel Morales to use the right hand when he was writing in the blackboard, hitting him with a 32 inches long rule.Even if they forced him to use the right,he refused. In my case, even though I am a natural righty,I wanted sometimes to try to use the left because I considered the right hand was a piece of cake, and sometimes when I wanted to use the left,I was scolded and forced to stay righty and I couldn't have the guts to put them in their place.

Handicap - By Kyle

I know this won't pertain to most on this page but thought i would share. I have been a left handed drummer for 35 years. This means setting up my drums the opposite of a righty. It mat sound like no big deal but my career has dwindled to nothing but teaching because it is very difficult to sit in with other musicians to show my school. To be honest, with a degree in music it has, been a little more then just a hobby. Yet it has been a handicap to get known. And at this stage of my life it would be quite difficult to accommodate a normal righty setup. Just another example of the challenges that really do still exist in a time when every other handicap under the sun needs to be considered. Power to the lefties! Thanks for listening

What products should I get? - By Lisa

My 6 year old son is the only left handed person in our entire family. We don't even know any others. I want to make things as easy as I can for him so I would really appreciate being told what I need to get both for school and at home. I never even thought about the difficulties untilhe tried to practice writing on a chalkboard and erased as he wrote. Thanks!

let the children be - By Heather

When I was a child I had nuns for teachers that hit your hand with a ruler if you tried to use your left hand. I adapted, however, it was wrong. I have 2 left handed children and 2 left handed grandchildren. I have never let anyone try to change them.

Let him be left-handed!! There is nothing wrong with being left handed. I would ask the school to stop immediately.

Left handed son - By Lillian Rita

My 4 year old son is in kindergarten and is left handed. His teachers are trying to make him use his right hand for writing. Is this right? I believe they should just leave him alone. Please advice.

I had no option in my everyday life than to adapt myself to use right-handed scissors, tin openers, etc.I continue being extremely left-handed,but now I can use both hands in many things.
