Left Handed School Experiences Survey

We have been running a major survey over the past year finding out about young left-handers' experiences at school and whether they are getting the help and advice they need or just being left to cope with right-handed tools and equipment as best they can.

The results are fascinating and show there is still a very long way to go to get equal teaching in the basics for a lot of left-handed children and that many teachers are nowhere near as well informed as we had hoped about the small things they can do to help their left-handed students.

There is a full analysis of the results on the special site we created for issued related to left-handed children.

Being a leftie - By Mikayla Berintinos

I'm a school child and it's hard being left handed because I can't use most scissors and it's hard for me to write in textbooks without smudgeing something. I'm one of the 3 people who are left handed out of 24 and trust me, It's no walk in the park.

Being left handed has influenced my creative personality in away that makes me a perfectionists. With a elitists attitude the word "can't", doesn't register inside my brain and with 30yrs.in my profession I tend to be hard on myself and impatient with others when mediocrity becomes acceptable.

Left handed and school - By Lisa

I know! I hate those desks they make my left hand not have enough space so its uncomfortable. I dont really see much of a differece between left and right handers but sometimes it makes me mad with the writting and smudging. I sometimes feel special for being left handed since ta my school there are like only 6 of us including 1 out of I dont know how many teachers of the entire school!! But one of friends had realized i was a lefty and said "Oh,....your a lefty? Well that sucks."
I thought No not really. But how rude and some people I have met act like racist bewtween left handed and right like one guy hates his left hand I swear. I dont get it its just your hands and one you use more then the other if you dont like that hand then cuy it off and see how it feels to do everything one handed and then he would be sorry because you need them both. 2 differences are better then one.

desks and scissors - By Ashlee

At my school, all the desks are meant for right-handers! Like, they all have the place to rest your arm while your writing on the right! And with scissors I hold them backwards, like I put my thumb in the multiple fingers hole, and my fingers in the thumb hole! STRANGE!!!!!!

i hate using right handed scissors. in one class i am regularly given sheets to cut and paste. It literally hurts if i use it for about 10 mins. i am not treated any differently because i am left handed, it just annoys me that the small things like writing can stain my hand because i have been taught the right handed way so i rnu my hand over what i have just written. but I AM LEFT HANDED AND PROUD OF IT!

Most of my friends think it's funny that I'm left-handed. I've actually taught myself how to use the right-hand scissors with my left hand. I think left-hand scissors are small and painful.

Not a Leftie - By Janice

My husband and one of my sisters are lefties. I heard and saw first-hand the hardships my sister faced in school (she is now 52 years old). They actually smacked her hands with a ruler for using her left hand. The house I live in today was built by a contractor for him and his family and he is left-handed. Everything in the house is setup for a left hander from the water handles to how a door opens. So if a right hander really wants to know what a left hander lives with everyday, all they have to do is stay in my house one week! I certainly have respect for those who are lefties!
