We started this survey on Left-Handers Day 2002 to find out whether there is a link between being left-handed and the choices people make in work and other activities. ¿ì¸® »çÀÌ¿¡ ¸µÅ©µÇ¾îÀÖ´ÂÁö¸¦ ¾Ë¾Æ³¾ ¿ÞÂÊ¿¡ÀÖ´Â ¿ÞÂÊÀÌ Á¶»ç°¡ ½ÃÀ۵ǰí - 2002 - Handers ÁÖ¿Í ¼±ÅÃÀ» »ç¶÷ ¼ÕÀ¸·Î ÀÛ¾÷ ¹× ±âŸ Ȱµ¿¿¡¼­ È®ÀÎÇϽʽÿÀ. As we expected, the vast majority of people who completed the survey are left-handed themselves. ¿ì¸®°¡ ¿¹»óÇß´ø Á¶»ç °á°ú ±¹¹ÎÀÇ ´ë´Ù¼ö°¡ ¿Ï·á - ½º½º·Î ³²¾ÆÀÖ´Ù.

It is generally thought that there are slightly more male left-handers than female in total so does this just reflect the fact that males are less likely to fill in surveys? We asked whether people thought there were advantages or disadvantages to being left-handed in their group or whether it was the same for left and right-handers. ¿ì¸®°¡ °Å±â »ç´Â »ç¶÷µéÀÇ ÀåÁ¡À̳ª ´ÜÁ¡ÀÌ ÀÖ¾ú´Ù ¿©ºÎ¸¦ ¿ÞÂÊÀ̳ª »ý°¢µÇ´Â - ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ ¼ÕÀ¸·Î ±×·ì¿¡¼­ µ¿ÀÏ ¿©ºÎ¸¦ ¿ÞÂʰú ¿À¸¥ÂÊ - handers ¹°¾ú´Ù.

Nearly a third thought that left-handers were at some disadvantage in their groups. ±× ¿ÞÂÊÀ¸·Î ¾à 3 »ý°¢ - handers ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ ±×·ì¿¡ ¸î °¡Áö ´ÜÁ¡ÀÌ ÀÖ¾ú´Ù.

Bearing in mind that 91% of the people were left-handed themselves, right-handers may just put this down to general minority group moaning! ¸¶À½¿¡ ±× »ç¶÷ÀÇ 91 %°¡ ¿ÞÂÊÀ¸·Î º£¾î¸µ -, ¿À¸¥ÂÊ - handers ±×³É ÀϹÝÀûÀÎ ¼Ò¼ö ±×·ìÀÌ ¾Æ·¡ ½ÅÀ½ÇÏ´ÙÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù ½º½º·Î ¼ÕÀ¸·Î! However, left-handers are generally a very adaptable lot and used to putting up with inconveniences, usually without moaning. ±×·¯³ª, ¿ÞÂÊ - handersÀº ÀϹÝÀûÀ¸·Î ¸Å¿ì ÀûÀÀ·ÂÀÌ ¸¹Àº ºÒÆí°ú ÇÔ²² Âü°í¸¸ ÀϹÝÀûÀ¸·Î ½ÅÀ½ÇÏÁö ¾Ê°í »ç¿ëÇÕ´Ï´Ù. Also, we asked WHY they were at a disadvantage and got some very interesting comments (see below). ¶ÇÇÑ, ¿ì¸®´Â ±×µéÀÌ ¿Ö ºÒÀÌÀÍÀ» ¿äûÇÏ°í ¾ÆÁÖ Èï¹Ì·Î¿î ÀǰßÀÌÀÖ¾î (¾Æ·¡ ÂüÁ¶). The disadvantages relate mainly to practical issues like equipment and workplace layouts that are difficult for left-handers to use. ´ÜÁ¡Àº ÁÖ·Î Àåºñ ¹× ÀÛ¾÷Àå ·¹À̾ƿô°ú °°Àº ½Ç¿ëÀûÀÎ ¹®Á¦·Î ³²¾ÆÀÖ´Ù °ü·ÃµÈ ¾î·Á¿î - handers¸¦ »ç¿ëÇÒ ¼öÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù.

If we asked a group of right-handers the same question, what would they say? ¸¸¾à ¿ì¸®°¡ Áö±ÝÀÇ ±×·ìÀ» ¹°¾ú - handers °°Àº Áú¹®À» ±×µéÀÌ ¹«½¼ ¸»À» ÇØÁÖ°í ½Í½À´Ï±î? Our guess is that nearly 100% would say that there was no difference. ¿ì¸® »ý°¢¿£ °ÅÀÇ 100 %¶ó°í Â÷À̰¡ ¾ø´Ù´Â °ÍÀÌ´Ù. However, of the small number of right-handers who have actually completed our survey, 30% thought there were disadvantages for left-handers. ±×·¯³ª, ¿À¸¥ÂÊÀÇ ÀÛÀº ¼ýÀÚÀÇ - handers ½ÇÁ¦·Î ¿ì¸®°¡ Á¶»ç¸¦ ¿Ï·á, 30 % °Å±â¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ºÒÀÌÀÍÀ» ÁÙ ¿ÞÂÊ - handers. From looking more closely at their surveys, this is explained by the fact that they have left-handers in their family and can see the problems for themselves. ´õ ÀÚ¼¼È÷µéÀÇ ¼³¹® Á¶»ç¿¡¼­ ã°í, À̰ÍÀÌ »ç½ÇÀº ±×µéÀÌ ¶°³­ - handers¿Í °¡Á·µéÀÌ ½º½º·Î ¹®Á¦¸¦ º¼ ¼öÀÖ´Â ¼³¸íÀÔ´Ï´Ù. Also, to come to our left-handed website and complete the left-handed survey, they clearly have a higher than average interest in left-handedness! ¶ÇÇÑ, ¿ì¸®ÀÇ ¿ÞÂÊ¿¡ ¿Í¼­ - À¥»çÀÌÆ®¸¦ °Ç³×¿Í ¿ÞÂÊ ¿Ï·á -, ±×µéÀº ºÐ¸íÈ÷ Æò±Õº¸´Ù ³ôÀº °ü½ÉÀ» °®°í Á¶»ç ¿Þ¼ÕÀâÀÌ - Á¿ì!

It is also interesting that 16% of all the people thought they actually had an ADVANTAGE from being left-handed. ±×°ÍÀº ¶ÇÇÑ ¸ðµç ±¹¹ÎÀÇ 16 %¿¡¼­ ÇýÅÃÀ» ´©·È´ø ±×µéÀÌ ½ÇÁ¦·Î ¿ÞÂʵǴ ÁÙ ¾Ë¾Ò - ¼ÕÀ¸·Î Èï¹Ì·Ó½À´Ï´Ù. Closer analysis (see below) shows that these advantages are generally thought to arise from the creative / artistic / intelligent / right side of the brain which is dominant in left-handers. °¡±îÀÌ ºÐ¼® (¾Æ·¡) / ¿¹¼ú / Áö´É / µÎ³úÀÇ ¿À¸¥ÂÊ¿¡¼­ ¿ÞÂÊ Áö¹èÀû - handers º¸¿©ÁÖ´Â ÀÌ·¯ÇÑ ÀåÁ¡Àº ÀϹÝÀûÀ¸·Î âÁ¶ÀûÀÎ »ý°¢À¸·Î ¶°¿À¸£´Â º¼ ¼öÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. They are also related to a fairly narrow range of jobs and professions. ±×µéÀº ÀÏÀÚ¸®¿Í Á÷¾÷ÀÇ ¸Å¿ì Á¼Àº ¹üÀ§¿Í °ü·ÃÀÌÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù.


Are there more or less left-handers than average in some groups? °Å±â¿¡ ´õ ¸¹°Å³ª ÀûÀº ¿ÞÂÊÀΰ¡¿ä - handers ÀϺΠ´Üü¿¡ ºñÇØ Æò±Õ?


We asked people whether they thought there were more or less than the average 10% of left-handers in their groups. ¿ì¸®´Â ±×µéÀÌ °Å±â¿¡ ÀÖ´ÂÁö ¹°¾î ÁÙ »ç¶÷ÀÌ ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ ±×·ì¿¡ - handers ¿ÞÂÊÀÇ Æò±Õ 10 % ÀÌ»ó ¶Ç´Â ÀÌÇÏ. Where possible, we asked them to give us the total numbers of people in the group and the number of left-handers and provided a form for people to complete to verify the information. °¡´ÉÇÏ´Ù¸é, ¿ì¸®´Â ¿ÞÂÊ - handersÀÇ ¼ö¸¦ ±×·ì¿¡ »ç¶÷ÀÇ Àüü ¼ýÀÚ¸¦ÁÖ°í »ç¶÷¿¡ ´ëÇÑ Á¤º¸¸¦ È®ÀÎÇÒ ¼ö¸¦ ¿Ï·áÇÏ·Á¸é ¾ç½ÄÀ» Á¦°øÇÏ´Â ±×µé¿¡°Ô ¹°¾ú´Ù.

As most people completing the survey were left-handed themselves, and we DO tend to notice other left-handers around us, our feeling is that people's assessment of the numbers should be fairly reliable. ´ëºÎºÐÀÇ »ç¶÷µéÀÌ ¿ÞÂÊÀ¸·Î ¼³¹® Á¶»ç¸¦ ¿Ï·áÇß´Ù - ½º½º·Î ¼ÕÀ¸·Î, ¿ì¸®´Â ´Ù¸¥ ¿ÞÂÊ ÅëÁö¸¦ÇÏ´Â °æÇâ - handers ¿ì¸® ÁÖº¯¿¡, ¿ì¸®ÀÇ ´À³¦Àº ¼ýÀÚÀÇ »ç¶÷µéÀÇ Æò°¡´Â »ó´çÈ÷ ½Å·ÚÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ¾î¾ßÇÕ´Ï´Ù. Following on from the initial conclusions of this survey, we hope to encourage a closer and more formal look at the numbers in some of the exceptional groups. If left-handedness DOES NOT affect career and other group choices, we would expect to have most people saying that there were an average number of left-handers in their group. ¿ÞÂÊ - Á¿ìÇÏ´Â °æ¿ì °æ·Â ¹× ±âŸ ±×·ìÀÇ ¼±Åÿ¡ ¿µÇâÀ» ¹ÌÄ¡Áö ¾ÊÀ¸¸ç, ¿ì¸®´Â ´ëºÎºÐÀÇ »ç¶÷µéÀÌ ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ ±×·ì¿¡ - handers ¿ÞÂÊÀÇ Æò±Õ °³¼ö °íÀ» °¡Áö°í ÀÖ´Ù°í ±â´ëÇß´Ù. As only 26% said that, the implication is that there IS some link between handedness and life choices. ºÒ°ú 26 %·Î ±× Àǹ̰¡ °Å±â¿¡ Á¿ì¿Í ÀλýÀº ¼±Åà »çÀÌ¿¡ ¾î¶² ¿¬°áÀÌ´Ù.

If that is the case, and as most of the people in the survey are left-handed themselves, we would expect them to have chosen groups where left-handedness is an advantage and therefore mainly say that there were MORE left-handers than average in their own group. °°Àº Á¶»ç¿¡¼­ ´ëºÎºÐÀÇ »ç¶÷µéÀÌ ³²¾ÆÀÖ´Â °æ¿ìÀ̸ç - ½º½º·Î ¼ÕÀ¸·Î, ¿ì¸® ±×·ìÀ» ¼±ÅÃÇÑ °÷À¸·Î ÁÖ·Î ¿ÞÂÊ - Á¿ì ÀåÁ¡ µû¶ó¼­ °Å±â¼­ ¿ÞÂÊ - handersº¸´Ù Æò±Õ¿¡ ´ëÇØ ¾ð±ÞÇÏ´Â °ÍÀ» ±â´ëÇÏ´Â °ÍÀÌ ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ ±×·ìÀ» ¼±ÅÃÇϽʽÿÀ.

Indeed, 34% DID say that, but surprisingly 39% said they were in groups with LESS than the average number of left-handers. ½ÇÁ¦·Î, 34 %,ÇÏÁö¸¸ ³î¶ø°Ôµµ ±×µéÀº ¿ÞÂÊ 39 % ¹Ì¸¸ÀÇ Æò±Õ °³¼ö¿Í ±×·ì¿¡ ÀÖ¾ú - handersÇß´Ù¶ó°í ±×·¨¾î¿ä.

Maybe this is not as simple as we thought! ¾Æ¸¶µµ À̰ÍÀÌ ¿ì¸® »ý°¢¸¸Å­ °£´ÜÇÏÁö ¾Ê´Ù!

To get to the bottom of this, we have to look more closely at the data to see if there is a match between groups where people think there are advantages or disadvantages to being left-handed and whether those same groups have more or less than average numbers of left-handers. Do left-handers choose groups where they have an advantage? ¿ÞÂÊ ¸¶ - handers ¾îµð¿¡ ±×µéÀÌ ÀÌÁ¡À» °¡Áö°íÀÖ´Â ±×·ìÀ» ¼±ÅÃÇÒ±î¿ä?


We analysed the data to cross-match people's views on whether there were advantages with whether there were more left-handers in their group. ¿ì¸®°¡ ½ÊÀÚ°¡¿¡ µ¥ÀÌÅÍ -¿¡ ´ëÇÑ À̵éÀÇ °ßÇØ´Â ÀÏÄ¡ÇÏ´Â ÀåÁ¡ÀÌ ÀÖ´ÂÁö ¿©ºÎ¿Í ÇÔ²² ´õ ¸¹Àº ¿ÞÂÊ - handersµéÀÇ ±×·ì¿¡ ÀÖ¾úÀ» ºÐ¼®Çß´Ù.

The chart below shows the data, with the height of the bars representing the number of people for each cross-match. ¾Æ·¡ Â÷Æ® ¸·´ë °¢ ½ÊÀÚ°¡¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ±¹¹ÎÀÇ ¼ö¸¦ - ÀÏÄ¡ ´ëÇ¥ÀÇ ³ôÀÌ¿Í µ¥ÀÌÅÍ,.

The blue bar labelled "Bar 1" shows that a large proportion of people who thought there were ADVANTAGES for left-handers in their group also thought there were MORE left-handers than average in their group.   • There is clearly a lot of interest in this survey and we will carry on collecting data and analysing results. ºÐ¸íÈ÷ÀÌ Á¶»ç¿¡ ¸¹Àº °ü½É°ú ¿ì¸®´Â µ¥ÀÌÅÍ ¼öÁý ¹× °á°ú ºÐ¼®À» ¼öÇàÇÑ´Ù.
  • There DOES seem to be a link between left-handedness and the career choices people make. °Å±â »çÀÌ¿¡ ¸µÅ©µÇ°í Áö°ÚÁÒ ¿ÞÂÊ - Á¿ì°ú °æ·ÂÀ» ¼±ÅÃÇÏ´Â »ç¶÷µéÀÇ Á¤½ÅÀ»Çß´Ù.
